Split, Croatia & Krka National Park

We left Montenegro to cross the border back into Croatia and make our way up the Dalmatian Coast. Split, Croatia's second-largest city (and largest city in the Dalmatian region) was a great place to stay for a few days. Split is home to Diocletian's Palace, which is a palace built in the fourth century for a Roman emperor of the same name.

This huge, fortress-like structure is enmeshed in the heart of the city. No matter where you turn, you run into massive city walls and column. There is a lot of tourism in Split, but the economy is mainly supported by a large shipyard and many other industries. As a result, it doesn't feel quite as touristy as some of the other places we have visited.

We spent one beautiful day reading and recharging on a beach right next to our AirBnb, and another day exploring the palace and the narrow city streets.

On our way out of Split to visit the Plitvice Lakes National Park, we stopped at Krka National Park since it was on our route. It is known for a series of waterfalls and crystal-clear water running through trees.
