The Ancient Stone City of Petra, Jordan

We spent a grand total of 40 hours in the country of Jordan. Since we were in Sharm El Sheikh, we decided to make the short trip to Petra, one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. We didn't see anything in Amman, but it did seem a lot more cosmopolitan and modern than the cities in Egypt.

We settled into our hotel and went to bed early, rising before dawn to start the three hour to drive at 6:30 am. Luckily, we had a driver again, so we got to sleep on the drive!

In case you aren't familiar, Petra is a city from around 300 B.C. It's famous because buildings and tombs were cut into the rock. A long, gorgeous rock canyon leads to the interior of the city, providing an excellent source of protection for the people who lived there. We spent 7 entire hours hiking and exploring the huge city. We even hiked up a mountain to see the border between Jordan and Israel! It was amazing to see all of the natural colors in the stone. The city is also in one of the Indiana Jones movies, as well as The Mummy Returns. Enjoy the photos!
