Kumarakom & Munnar - State of Kerala, India

We flew to Kochi in the Indian state of Kerala for the next stage of our trip. Kerala is on the southwest coast of the country, and stands in stark contrast to the Northern part of the country. Kerala has a tropical climate, and we could feel the humidity the moment we stepped off the plane.

First, we went to the town of Kumarakom, which is a village on Vembanad Lake. Canals slice through the town, and houseboats drift along the lake. Spending an afternoon on a houseboat was the main reason we came to Kumarakom. We visited a bird sanctuary as well, but since it was raining we didn't see much wildlife.

The houseboat was really cool, and incredibly relaxing! They are fully equipped with private bedrooms and bathrooms, but since we were short on time we were thrilled to have an afternoon. The houseboat staff cooked us a wonderful Indian lunch with fresh fried fish. We're not really bird watchers, but the staff pointed out a lot of birds and Chuck was equal parts fascinated and horrified by the massive bats flying overhead.

After Kumarakom, we flew to Munnar, which is inland a bit in the mountains. The landscape is incredible. Tea plantations cover the hillsides. We visited a spice plantation and took a drive through the mountains, enjoying spotting foxes and elephants.

We also enjoyed time in our gorgeous hotel. A stunning infinity pool on the roof offered the views you can see below. One afternoon we simply soaked in the pool while it was raining, just enjoying the nature all around us.

After Munnar, we went back to Kochi for a day and a flight back to Delhi. There, we once again enjoyed the hospitality of the Malhotra family. We celebrated our very first Diwali, and were able to participate in the customs and learn the stories of the holiday.
